Putting the cap situation into perspective . . . there are 12 forwards, 7 defensemen and 2 goalies under contract on the NHL roster right now, which when you include buried contract value for Engvall and retained transactions for Kessel amounts to $80.3 million.
If Sandin is not going to be playing, his $900k is not there. If Robertson doesn't make the roster, his $822k is not there. That leaves $3.2 million to sign Dermott & Mikheyev and have a roster of 12F, 7D, 2 G.
If Mikheyev comes in at $1.3, Dermot comes in at $1m, that would likely leave room for Barbanov or Anderson or whomever. With a couple of weeks of time, Engvall would likely fit under the cap and could be called up . . . . there's not a lot of room, and in the event of injuries to low cost players, there's less room to replace them under LTIR rules if we sit too close to the cap.

I think the moves this off season push him back (Probably best), but what are the options for him if he is not in the NHL?

I think Mikheyev deserves more than 1.2M.
He should get something close to 2M for it to be fair imo. He's gonna be an important part of the Leafs next season.
Book it. |

I think he'll be our 2nd or 3rd line LW, but he needs to come in at a cheaper price. |

Connor Brown requested 4.8 million. Makes Mikheyevs ask not so outlandish.

It doesn't matter what he deserves
the arbitrator only cares about results and his 20 points in 40 games wont get him much. Historically a player like him as been rewarded as low as 800K to as high as 1.5M. It'll be somewhere in between.
Of course unless the arbitrator decides to go rogue...then that would suck. |

Giggsy and I already pointed out that Mikheyev will win his case and be awarded the $2.7M because, Leafs.. That's why... |

What is a 40pt. rookie season worth?
Would they maybe go by the projected totals if he did not get injured.

It was 23 pts in 39 games. That's 48 pts in 82...
I'm guessing 2 years 1.45 per. |

I dont think they do.
I am going off of an article on the athletic that was played out nicely.
There was a guy that played for Dallas in 2018 that went to arb with similar stats to Mikeyhev and he was awarded 900K.
There were other examples over the years of similar ones getting 1M to as high as 1.5M.
Historically an arbitrator doesn't favour a player who has half a season to his name and 20 points.
I would guess 1.25M. Right in the middle. |

1.45 M would be very high and unexpected but you can rule it out. |

The super low number of games is going to be his downfall at arbitration, which is probably doing the Leafs a favour if they award two years at a cheap price.
I like Mickey. He's a legit top 9 NHLer and has a decent ceiling if he can stay healthy and play with good players.
